I bought this book as a beginner knitter and really utilized it. I was looking for basic patterns so that I could understand how basic hats are constructed in the round, or how to make a basic pair of gloves. It has extremely clear instructions and good tips on how to modify the master patterns. I've never tried to make a sweater from it, though I prefer to make top down sweaters in one piece, so it may not be the book for me when it comes to sweaters. But it is a good basic reference book when you want to make something of your own design and inspiration!

May I chime in here? I have both Teach Yourself Visually Knitting and Designing Knitwear and these two books don't really compare. TYVK is a collection of basic patterns with suggestions for modifying them and thus comparable to Ann Budd's pattern books. Based on the Amazon preview I preferred Turner's book, but that's personal. And it just might be that Budd's patterns are better - because I found the handwarmers I knit following Turner's pattern uncomfortable (horizontal opening for the thumb but no gusset) which makes me wary about trying out other patterns. Overall the book is very basic, I would say it's for a beginning knitter.

Designing Knitwear, on the other hand, is about inspiration, getting your ideas on paper, and expressing them in yarn. And lots of other things I don't remember, because I'm just now re-reading the book. When I read it the first time I wasn't an experienced enough knitter to really profit from the book.

My two cents on the books in question...

It does sound like it would be a great reference. More for a beginning knitter or an experienced one?

So, how do you think this book compares to other design books on the market? Is it a reasonable purchase instead of something else, or is it better to use alongside of them? (If you have the Ann Budd Knitter's Handy books, do you still need this one? What about Deborah Newton's Designing Knitwear?)
