Review: Wendy Knits Lace

Wendy’s books just keep getting better. Her first, “Wendy Knits,” while all sorts of good is my least favorite. She followed that with two top-notch sock books which are fantastic, but my sock-knitting tends to be straight stockinette-stitch, so I don’t use them as much as I might. But this? This is lace, and I do so love knitting lace. That makes this book my favorite … so far!

Remember when you were a little girl and you sat at your grandmother’s knee while she told you wonderful stories about her life, all while you sorted through her cedar chest full of beautifully crafted pieces, every one with a story?

No? I didn’t, either. But suddenly, I don’t feel quite so left out, because that’s exactly what this book feels like.

This book is filled with some really lovely lace designs by some very talented designers like Annie Modesitt, Lisa Lloyd, Berta Karapetyan, Melissa Matthay, Phoenix Bess and more. The thing you need to know, though, is that they’re not all new designs.

To put it simply, this book is a masterpiece, and that’s not a word I bandy about loosely. Recently reprinted by Schoolhouse Press, this is the story of Susanna Lewis’ classic recreation of a 19th century lace sampler for the Brooklyn Museum.

Review: Arctic Lace

Now, this is not a glossy, glamorous, slick book. The photos are black-and-white, and it’s got a very basic kind of feel. It’s not trying to woo you with atmospheric photos and lush backgrounds. Instead, it’s showing you what really counts–the knitting, and the people who make it (and the musk ox who grow the fiber).

Review: Victorian Lace Today

The point is that Jane Sowerby took these vague if authentic patterns and reinterpreted them for us modern knitters who barely have time to knit, much less to think.

The best part, though, is that even though the 21st century is rife in clutter, stress, and jam-packed schedules, these lovely lace patterns–almost entirely shawls–can let us recapture part of the serenity and slower pace of the Victorian past.

Review: Traditional Knitted Lace Shawls

There are two things I need to tell you first. One, is that there are two editions of this book, since Interweave Press nicely saved it from its dreaded out-of-print state. And, two, I own a copy of both editions. This should pretty much tell you right off the bat that I like this book. Or that, really, I love this book. My very first attempt at lace was inspired by this book. So, it’s possible that I might be just a little biased.
